Every age on a private trip

The open trip is for ages 10–50. Children under 10 and travellers over 50 can join a private trip.

Fitness

Fitness first

The trips involve a lot of physical activity, including steep, slippery trekking to waterfalls. Make sure everyone is fit.

Health

Health conditions

Anyone with asthma, hypertension, heart disease, acute gastritis, diabetes, epilepsy or sinusitis should consult a doctor and bring personal medicines.

Safety

Safety comes first

If the weather turns, parts of the itinerary change for everyone's safety. Participants follow the tour leader's direction.

Pack for the heat

Sumba is quite hot. Bring trekking sandals or shoes, a water-resistant daypack, a hat, sunglasses and sunblock.

Getting to Sumba & Transportation Options

Arrive
Tambolaka Airport (TMC), Southwest Sumba. Pick-up is 11.00–12.00 WITA at the airport or a hotel nearby, so arrive the day before or on a flight landing before noon.
Depart
Waingapu Airport (WGP), East Sumba. The trip ends at 11.00 WITA, and flying home the next day is advised.
On the road
The open trip travels by Innova. Private groups of 6–10 use 2 cars.
Flights
Not included. Buy your own round-trip tickets; the itinerary can't be adjusted to flight times.

Are there family-friendly departures during school holidays?

Private trips run on the date your family chooses, subject to accommodation, so you can plan around school holidays. Open trips depart every Thursday.

What is the best time of year for a small group trip?

December to March is the green season, April and May turn the hills from green to yellow, and June to November is the yellow season.

How much does a group trip cost per person?

It depends on group size and length: for example USD 440 per person for 4 participants on 4D3N, or USD 410 for 10. See the rates table.

Do larger groups travel together?

Groups of 6–10 participants travel in 2 cars.

What are the rooms like?

Twin-share rooms in 3-star hotels: Sinar Tambolaka and Padadita, or similar. Villas, suites and a junior suite are available as upgrades priced per night; Lelewatu Sumba Resort upgrades are on request.
